趁着世界杯的热度，我们再学一波运动赛事相关的词汇。

顺便补充P2口语话题需要的语料：Describe a competition/contest you would like to participate in.

1. draw /dr??/

a.v. 吸引；使动心

e.g. The 2022 World Cup in Qatar draws huge crowds. 2022卡塔尔世界杯吸引了大量观众。

b.v./n.（比赛）打成平局，不分胜负

e.g. Denmark drew 0-0 with Tunisia on Tuesday.

e.g. The game ended in a draw.

除此以外，tie 也可以表示平局的意思。如：the game ended in a tie.

2. knock out /'n?k a?t/

[PHRASAL VERB 短语动词] 击败；淘汰；

e.g. Qatar eliminated in group stage, becomes earliest ever host to be knocked out. 卡塔尔在小组赛中被淘汰，成为有史以来最早出局的东道主。

注：host 主办方

knockout adj.淘汰制的

e.g. The World Cup will soon reach its knockout stage/ phase: win or go home. 世界杯即将进入到淘汰赛阶段。

3. elimination

n. 在竞赛中淘汰

e.g. Germany were in danger of World Cup elimination after shock loss to Japan. .德国爆冷输给日本后面临世界杯淘汰的危险。

eliminate v.

e.g. A loss to Spain will see Germany eliminated in the group stage for a second straight World Cup. 输给西班牙将使德国连续二届世界杯在小组赛中被淘汰。

4. round /ra?nd/ (比赛的)一轮，局，场；

e.g. Qatar, after losing their opening two games, were the first team to crash out of the race for the Round of 16. 卡塔尔在输掉前两场比赛后，是第一支退出16强赛的球队。

e.g. Brazil made it to the next round. 巴西晋级下一轮比赛。

注：make it to 到达; 赶得及; 到达某地.

晋级也可以说：advance to the next round

5. cutthroat

adj. 竞争激烈的；残酷无情的

e.g. cutthroat [=ruthless] competition你死我活的竞争

e.g. The FIFA World Cup is a grand spectacle of unbreakable friendship and cutthroat rivalry 国际足联世界杯一场见证坚定友谊和残酷竞争的盛大赛事。
